Yes. Larvae of the carpet beetle can harm fabrics such as wool, rugs, clothes, upholstery, and other items made up of natural fibre. As larvae usually remain out of sight, residents of Collingwood can identify signs of holes, fabric thinning, or skin sheds before seeing the bugs.
Why Carpet Beetles Often Go Unnoticed
Carpet beetle can sometimes go unnoticed since there is a big difference between their adults and larvae in appearance. Adults of these beetles are small in size and can be usually found near the window, curtains or in the brightest spots in the house. While larvae prefer darker corners and quiet spots. A Collingwood pest control expert can help identify the insect when the source of fabric damage is uncertain.
Most problems arise from larvae of carpet beetles who are responsible for most damage done by these beetles. It all depends on the species but the larvae can usually be brown, striped or hairy. They will vary in size and also tend to be hard to spot due to being hard to reach.
The diet of these larvae consists of materials consisting of organic matter such as wool, felt, fur, feathers, leather, upholstered furniture. In some cases, larvae are also attracted to lint, dead insects, pet hair, anything organic and collected in untouched places around the house.
Some spots in your home which will suit well for them are hard-to-reach places. Such as closets, boxes, underneath the furniture, behind the furniture, along the baseboards, rugs and any hidden areas with stored stuff.
Since the larvae are usually hidden, people will notice the damage before seeing the pests themselves. The appearance of small holes in clothes, thinning areas on carpets, damages in woollen products, or molted larvae skins could be the first signs.
The presence of such signs doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s an infestation of considerable size. However, if these signs appear repeatedly, then it’s a good reason to check other materials.
Signs Carpet Beetles May Be Active in Your Home
One of the key indications of carpet beetles is irregular damage to fabrics made from natural fibers. Holes may be present in woollen clothing, blankets, carpets, felt, or upholstered furniture.
Unlike regular wear and tear, damage caused by carpet beetles may be found in places that are not regularly disturbed. For instance, damage may occur on a sweater kept in the back of a closet or on the edges of a carpet hidden under furniture.
Residences may also have small, hairy larvae of carpet beetles or the skins they molt in the process of growth. These skins may accumulate in damaged fabric, drawers, baseboards, and other sheltered areas.
Adult carpet beetles could be an indication too. Depending on the species, adult carpet beetles can be tiny in size and either oval-shaped or round in shape. Adults are sometimes found around windows due to the fact that adult beetles are attracted to light.
If you find one adult carpet beetle in your house, that does not necessarily mean that the damage is going on everywhere in the house. Adult carpet beetles might get into the house from outside areas especially when the season is warm.
If you find multiple adult carpet beetles or if they are found with larvae, cast-off skins or damaged materials then this requires further investigation.
