How to Rodent-Proof Your Home in Barrie, Ontario

Rodent Removal Services in Barrie, Ontario

Start With a Full Exterior Inspection

Walk all the way around the exterior of your house, checking everything from the bottom up to the roof line.

You will need to pay special attention to any place where the materials used in the construction of your house have come together.

Common rodent entry points include:

  • Foundation cracks and openings
  • Gaps around electrical cables
  • Plumbing penetrations
  • Gas lines
  • Air-conditioning lines
  • Dryer vents
  • Exhaust vents
  • Garage door edges
  • Worn door sweeps
  • Openings under siding
  • Soffit and fascia gaps
  • Roof vents
  • Areas around decks and additions

Do not assume an opening is too small to matter. Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps, so even minor defects should be inspected.

Seal Gaps Around Pipes, Cables and Utility Lines

Penetrations through which utilities pass are among the most common vulnerabilities near a building.

Inspect the points at which water pipes, electrical cables, telephone lines, air conditioning units, etc. pass through the external walls.

In case there is room between the pipe or cable and the wall, it needs to be properly sealed using rat-proofing material.

Sealing with caulk may not suffice in larger gaps since rats could chew through such softer materials. In some cases, metal mesh, hardware cloth or any other strong barrier would need to be installed before sealing.

Take care of any vulnerabilities close to the ground since rats crawling near the foundation walls can easily access these penetrations. You can also read more about how plumbing openings let pests into homes.

Check Exterior Doors and Garage Doors

A door may appear closed while still leaving enough space underneath for a mouse to enter.

Inspect:

  • Front and back doors
  • Basement entrances
  • Side doors
  • Patio doors
  • Garage entry doors
  • Attached garage doors

Repair any worn weather stripping and fit a snug door sweep if required.

The garage door requires special care. Inspect both lower corners when the door is closed. Old seals, uneven cement flooring, or weather stripping can create gaps that mice use to gain entry into the garage.

After they gain access to the attached garage, mice may find further ways of entering other spaces in the house. This is why it helps to understand why garages are a major pest entry zone.

Protect Dryer Vents and Other Exterior Openings

However, since homes require ventilation, one cannot seal off vents completely.

Instead, check if the dryer vents, exhaust vents, attic vents and all other exterior vents have suffered any damage or cracks at the edges of the vents.

Where necessary, one may use a rat-proof screen or guard that would prevent rats from entering but allow adequate air flow. One must ensure that the cover on the vent is suitable for the vent. For instance, the dryer vents should not create lint build-up or block the airflow.

Inspect the Foundation Carefully

Walk around the entire foundation and look for cracks, damaged mortar, gaps beneath siding and openings around basement windows.

Pay special attention to:

  • Foundation corners
  • Window wells
  • Areas behind shrubs
  • Deck attachments
  • Utility penetrations
  • Steps and porches
  • Garage foundations

It is also common for rodents to run near walls since it affords them protection. The hole in this area would become a way for them to enter.

Fix the damaged areas instead of using materials that can easily be pushed aside by rodents.

Check the Roofline, Soffits and Fascia

Rodent proofing should not stop at ground level.

Mice are capable climbers and may reach higher parts of a building using trees, downspouts, brickwork, decks and other surfaces.

Inspect:

  • Soffits
  • Fascia boards
  • Roof vents
  • Areas around dormers
  • Gaps where roof sections meet
  • Openings around attic vents

Damaged soffits or loose building materials can provide direct access to attic spaces.

Also trim tree branches that touch or hang directly over the roof where practical.

Make Food Harder for Rodents to Access

Although sealing the structure is one way to protect against rodents, food outside of the building will still attract them.

In the house, any vulnerable food needs to be stored properly and spillage cleaned up immediately.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Cereals
  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Pasta
  • Seeds
  • Nuts
  • Baking supplies
  • Pet food

When there are rats around, pet food shouldn’t be kept outside overnight. Garages and sheds should be checked too. Bags containing birdseed, grass seed, and pet food can act as readily available food sources.

The products can be moved to strong containers with tight lids.

Keep Garbage and Compost Secure

Rodents can find an abundant food source from garbage.

Seal the garbage containers outdoors and repair any broken lids. Do not leave unsealed garbage bags outdoors for rodents to access.

If you are using a composter, ensure that it is properly managed and does not have easy access by rodents.

Clean up any spilled waste at garbage and recycling sites instead of letting food accumulate near the house.

Remove Water Sources

Rodents also need water.

Inspect your home for:

  • Leaking pipes
  • Dripping taps
  • Standing water
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Condensation problems
  • Water collecting around foundations

Basements, laundry rooms, utility rooms, and garages are some of the areas where moisture issues tend to be overlooked.

Repairing leakages will also help to prevent moisture, which will deter other pests.

Reduce Rodent Hiding Places Around the Yard

Rodents have plenty of places to hide in a messy environment before making their way into the house.

Maintain the lawn or weeds around the perimeter of the structure. Get rid of any excess items around your home’s exterior.

Do not store firewood next to the house or on the ground.

Also check beneath:

  • Decks
  • Porches
  • Sheds
  • Outdoor stairs
  • Stored equipment

These protected areas can provide shelter close to potential entry points.

Rodent-Proof Your Home Before Fall and Winter

Rodent prevention is necessary all year round; however, late summer and early fall are key periods for Barrie residents to perform checks on their properties.

With the drop in outdoor temperatures, rodents start to search for safe places inside.

Make all necessary exterior repairs before winter comes.

A useful seasonal inspection should include:

  • Foundation gaps
  • Garage door seals
  • Exterior doors
  • Utility lines
  • Dryer and exhaust vents
  • Soffits and rooflines
  • Basement windows
  • Areas beneath decks and porches

Repeat the inspection after renovations, roofing work, utility installation or other changes to the exterior of the home. A seasonal pest prevention checklist for Barrie can also help with these inspections.

Signs Rodents May Already Be Inside

Rodent proofing becomes more complicated when mice or rats are already living inside the structure.

Watch for:

Rodent Droppings

Droppings may appear in cupboards, drawers, basements, garages, utility rooms or along walls.

Scratching or Movement at Night

Sounds inside walls, ceilings or attics can indicate rodents moving through hidden spaces.

Chewed Food Packaging

Rodents may chew through bags, boxes and other food packaging.

Gnaw Marks

Damage may appear on wood, plastic, stored belongings and other materials.

Nesting Material

Shredded paper, insulation, fabric or other soft materials may be collected for nesting.

Repeated Sightings

Seeing mice regularly, particularly during daylight hours, can indicate an established problem.

Why Sealing the Home Alone May Not Solve an Active Infestation

If rodents are already present, sealing all entrances without any idea where they are living will only lead to more problems.

They need to first be found and controlled.

A complete rodent-control approach normally combines:

  1. Inspection
  2. Identification of entry points
  3. Rodent removal or control
  4. Exclusion work
  5. Food and moisture correction
  6. Follow-up monitoring

This is more effective than relying on traps alone while leaving the original entry points open.

When to Call a Rodent Control Professional

Professional help will be required if you continue to find droppings, there is evidence of movement in the walls or ceiling, you are unable to identify the entry point, or you have returning rodents despite your trapping efforts.

Finding hidden entry points will not always be an easy task, especially for attached garages, roofline, foundation, decks, and other utility entries.

A professional inspection can determine the areas of rodent activity, as well as structural issues that might be allowing the rodents inside.

Should you need mice control or other rodent help in Barrie, Simcoe PestX can inspect your property and provide an action plan for rodents around your house.

For recurring rodent problems, pest control in Barrie can help identify activity, entry points, and appropriate exclusion measures.
