Why Ground Beetles Become More Noticeable in Fall?

How to Tell a Ground Beetle from Other Dark-Coloured Bugs

Ground beetles might be confused with many dark-colour insects. It is particularly easy when a beetle is running fast on the floor, and the house owner only catches it for a couple of seconds.

The majority of ground beetles possess a dark brown or black color with an appearance that is tough and shiny. The body shape is usually elongate or slightly oval with hard wings that cover the whole body from the back. An Innisfil pest control expert can help confirm the insect when identification is difficult.

Another characteristic is the movement. Ground beetles are good runners and can move fast whenever they are disturbed.

The body of the insect possesses long legs and threadlike antennae. Depending on the species, the wing covers possess longitudinal grooves or ribs.

Ground beetles are often mistaken by homeowners for cockroaches. Cockroaches generally have a flatter body shape than ground beetles, which usually have a more rigid body due to their hard outer wing cover.

Colour is not a sufficient way to distinguish the two. There are a number of insects common in Ontario homes that may be black or dark brown.

Insect identification should be based on body shape, hard wing cover, legs, antennae, and behaviour. If there are continuous sightings of dark-colour beetles and their identification is difficult, professional identification can assist.

What It Means If You Find Ground Beetles Indoors

Discovering ground beetles within one’s home may seem a cause for concern, particularly where they are big, dark, and speedy. However, in many situations, ground beetles are viewed as a type of unwanted visitors rather than harmful household pests.

They do not usually cause destruction to clothing items, furniture, foods, or building supplies. They do not usually form breeding colonies in houses either.

Ground beetles will not attack humans. They may pinch a person holding them or pressing against their skin, hence handling them without protection.

One occurrence of a ground beetle is nothing much but an insect finding its way into one’s house. Several occurrences, on the other hand, will provide more helpful information.

The presence of many ground beetles can suggest that beetles are very active in and around the house during the fall season. However, the appearance of the beetles does not necessarily suggest that the beetles are breeding inside your house.

Note whether the beetles show up frequently and whether they are alike in appearance. This will help you decide whether the beetles at hand are ground beetles or other pests found in dark coloured houses.

What Innisfil Homeowners Should Do When Ground Beetles Keep Appearing

A single ground beetle can often be gotten rid of without a full treatment of the entire house. You can take the beetle into a jar and release it in the outdoors or even use a vacuum cleaner.

Do not squish or handle an unknown beetle using your hands. In case you choose to use a vacuum cleaner, make sure you dispose of it afterwards so that the insect is completely removed from the residence.

In case there are sightings of the beetles over time, document the number and location of their appearances. A couple of sightings could just be due to natural movement of the season while sighting of several like insects is important.

Photographs can also assist in identifying them. Ensure to take a photo capturing the shape, wings, legs and antennae.

Professional pest control services could come in handy if there are beetles that keep showing up in large numbers or if you are not sure what insect it is that you are dealing with. Accurate identification is important as other insects such as cockroaches could also show up in dark brown or black colors.

Simcoe PestX can assist homeowners in Innisfil to identify the insect and find out if any further pest control measures are needed.
