Why Can Cockroaches Stay Active When It Is Freezing Outside?
Even though there might be a cold winter night in Barrie, it does not imply that the spaces within your house are going to be cold. Heating warms up the spaces inside and the kitchen provides food, water and shelter. A Barrie pest control expert can help identify where recurring cockroach activity is coming from.
German roach is one of the most common kinds of cockroaches that live in households. The very species of cockroaches is able to survive during the whole winter inside the house. The presence of German roach in January does not mean that it hatched from the snow. Cockroaches and oothecae can enter the house in the form of items, food, and used furniture.
The presence of cockroaches does not always indicate a dirty kitchen. A clean kitchen can still have cracks and plumbing where the cockroaches hide. Some of the measures one can take include discovering the source of the cockroaches and limiting their access to water, food, and shelter.
Check These Four Kitchen Areas First
Around and Under the Fridge
Illuminate the floor in the lower part of the refrigerator from its lower edge. Look at the cracks not only at its edges but also where it joins the adjacent cabinet and the wall.
Check for any signs of insects and other weird things in the cracks. Use a mirror to see behind the corner without having to put your fingers in the crack.
Your observation can be divided into two separate questions: “Can this be a sign of cockroaches?” and “Are there things that need cleaning or repair?” The stain can be cleaned but does not mean there is a cockroach problem.
Your initial inspection should be limited to easily accessible places. Do not open the covers of the appliances and do not move the refrigerator by yourself because it has a water connection and can be damaged while moving.
Beside the Stove and Along Nearby Cabinets
After the stove has been turned off and has cooled down, inspect the possible openings from the stove to the cabinets.
Photograph possible evidence, but clean up any crumbs or grease you can get to because you will want something to compare with in the future.
Moving a gas range and disassembling it in order to see behind it should be avoided if such an action is likely to put you at risk for bodily harm.
Use clear and precise language when making your observations. Saying “Dark specks on the left side of the stove” is preferable to “There is something behind the stove.”
Under the Kitchen Sink
Uncover some of the items stored inside the cupboards in order to have access to the back corners of the cabinet. Do not relocate them to a different room while examining.
Inspect the area where the pipes enter the cabinet or the wall. Be on the lookout for any insects and other items, but do not overlook any leaks and moisture.
In case the bottom of the cabinet is wet, it is a temporary solution to get rid of the wetness. Determine whether there is any leakage that needs to be fixed.
At this point, you should remember to inspect the area around the dishwasher. Do not disassemble the panels and do not touch any electrical components.
Inside Cupboards and Pantry Corners
Begin by searching near the place. Search for anything in the corners of shelves, joints and hinges, and then at the back of any food storage.
Make a search on each shelf one after the other to ensure that you do not forget what you have seen and turn a simple task into a big cleaning exercise in the kitchen.
Make sure to check all boxes before discarding them. Do not put anything that you are not certain of in your collection. Cockroach monitoring traps are generally installed in areas such as refrigerators, stoves, sinks, and cabinets.
What Signs Should You Look For?
| Possible sign | What to notice |
|---|---|
| Live or dead insects | Photograph the body from above, with a size reference nearby if possible. |
| Small immature cockroaches | Young cockroaches resemble adults but are smaller and lack fully developed wings. |
| Dark spots or smears | Record their location; crumbs and other debris can be mistaken for droppings. |
| Shed skins | Look for empty, insect-shaped remains around suspected hiding places. |
| Egg cases | These are small capsules, rather than a scattering of loose eggs. |
What Can You Do Tonight If You Find Signs?
You can take useful first steps without trying to treat every hidden space yourself.
Record the Location Before Cleaning
Document the evidence by taking pictures, along with the date, room, and precise location in the building. The location should be recorded as specific as, “under the sink near the cold water tap” and not just “kitchen.”
Protect Food and Address Moisture
Store open food in properly sealed containers. Wipe up any visible spillage, clean the dirty dishes, and put the trash in a covered bin.
Determine if the wet spot that you have identified is a one-time spill or a constant leakage. Have any necessary repairs done. This will decrease the resources available, but cleaning alone must not be offered as a surefire solution.
Use Sticky Monitors to Track Activity
You need to place your traps at areas indicated in the package. Also, place the traps in those places where cockroaches can perch most commonly. Make sure that the area where you install traps will not be within reach for children and pets.
It is recommended to note places of installation of all your traps as well as their installation times for later monitoring purposes.
A day one catch of zero insects is no guarantee that the area does not have cockroaches. Placement is critical, and monitors are tools to locate, not a complete solution. If cockroach activity continues, Simcoe PestX can help determine where the activity is concentrated.
